About the artist
Violent Femmes are an American band formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1980, widely credited as pioneers of the folk punk sound. The core lineup paired Gordon Gano's nervous, confessional songwriting and acoustic guitar with Brian Ritchie's percussive acoustic bass playing, creating a stripped-down, raw energy that stood apart from both the punk and folk scenes of the era. Their sound blended punk urgency with acoustic instrumentation, giving them a distinctive place in early-1980s alternative music.
Their 1983 self-titled debut album became a cult phenomenon, driven by word of mouth and college radio rather than mainstream hits. Songs like «Blister in the Sun», «Kiss Off», «Add It Up» and «Gone Daddy Gone» slowly turned the record into one of the best-selling and most enduring albums of the alternative rock canon, eventually reaching platinum certification. The band's blunt lyrics about desire, frustration and adolescence resonated across generations of listeners.
After a mid-1980s split, Violent Femmes reunited and continued releasing albums through the following decades, cementing a legacy as one of the defining acts of American alternative and folk punk. Their influence can be heard in countless indie and punk-folk acts that followed, and their catalog remains a staple of college rock radio and film soundtracks alike.
