Underoath

Underoath are an American metalcore band formed in Tampa, Florida in 1997. Though the lineup has shifted considerably over the years, the group became widely recognized after the 2004 release of They’re Only Chasing Safety, an album that fused screamed and clean vocals with electronic textures and helped define the mid-2000s post-hardcore and metalcore sound alongside acts in the Solid State and Tooth & Nail rosters. Drummer and vocalist Aaron Gillespie is the band’s longest-tenured member and a key figure in shaping their melodic, emotionally raw approach.

Following 2006’s Define the Great Line, the band continued to explore heavier and more atmospheric territory before going on hiatus in 2013. They reunited a few years later for anniversary tours celebrating their most acclaimed records, reconnecting with a fan base that had grown up on their blend of aggression and vulnerability. Early in their career, their lyrics were shaped by members’ Christian faith, though this influence became more personal and less overt as the band evolved.

In 2018 Underoath returned with Erase Me, an album recorded secretly and released on Fearless Records that pushed toward a more mainstream, electronic-leaning rock sound while retaining moments of their heavier roots. Tracks like «On My Teeth» showed the band embracing rawer, more explicit songwriting, marking a deliberate departure from their earlier image and drawing mixed reactions from longtime fans.
