Type O Negative

Type O Negative were an American gothic/doom metal band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1989, fronted by bassist and vocalist Peter Steele, whose deep baritone became the band's most recognizable trait. Emerging from New York's underground metal scene, the group fused doom metal's slow, heavy riffing with gothic rock atmosphere, industrial textures and dark, often theatrical humor, setting them apart from both the death metal scene Steele came from and the more polished gothic rock acts of the era.

The band built its reputation through albums combining crushing heaviness with melancholic melody and unusually dark, self-deprecating lyrics, exploring themes of love, death, depression and sexuality with a mix of sincerity and irony. Tracks such as «Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)» and «Christian Woman» became signature songs, showcasing the group's ability to be simultaneously menacing and darkly comic. Their sound, often stretched across lengthy, atmospheric compositions, influenced the development of gothic metal as a distinct subgenre.

Type O Negative remained active through the 2000s, continuing to tour and record until Peter Steele's death in 2010, which effectively ended the band. Their catalog, marked by Steele's distinctive voice, doom-laden riffs and morbid wit, has left a lasting mark on gothic and doom metal, earning them a devoted cult following that has persisted well beyond the band's active years.
