Traveling Wilburys

Traveling Wilburys were a rock supergroup formed in 1988 by Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. The band grew out of a session in Los Angeles where Harrison needed a quick B-side track for a single and ended up recording with the other four musicians almost by accident, resulting in «Handle with Care», a song too strong to waste as a throwaway. On record the five men appeared as fictional half-brothers named Wilbury, wearing matching stage names, a wink at the seriousness of the classic rock establishment.

Their debut album, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1, blended folk-rock songwriting, jangly production and warm vocal harmonies, drawing on each member's distinct catalog — Dylan's lyrical weight, Orbison's operatic voice, Harrison's melodic sensibility, Lynne's polished studio sound and Petty's heartland rock grit. Songs like «End of the Line» and «Tweeter and the Monkey Man» became fan favorites for the way they fused these styles into something loose and joyful rather than a collision of egos.

Orbison died shortly after the first album's release, and the group recorded a second album, cheekily numbered Vol. 3, as a four-piece. The Traveling Wilburys remain remembered as a rare case where legendary solo artists set aside their individual identities to make genuinely collaborative, unpretentious music together.
