About the artist
Toto is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1977, built around a core of accomplished session musicians, most notably keyboardist David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro. Its founding lineup also included Steve Lukather on guitar and Steve Porcaro on keyboards, and the group quickly became known for a polished, virtuosic sound that fused rock with pop, R&B, funk, and progressive elements, reflecting the members’ backgrounds as top-tier session players.
The band achieved major success with its self-titled 1978 debut and reached its commercial and critical peak with «Toto IV» in 1982, which produced the enduring hits «Africa», «Rosanna», and «Hold the Line» and won multiple Grammy Awards. Toto’s music became a staple of album-oriented and adult contemporary rock radio, admired for tight musicianship, layered arrangements, and memorable hooks.
Over the decades the band underwent numerous lineup changes, including the loss of Jeff Porcaro in 1992, while continuing to tour and record. «Africa» in particular has enjoyed a lasting afterlife, becoming a cultural touchstone and introducing the band to new generations of listeners decades after its release.
