About the artist
Tom Waits is an American singer-songwriter, composer and actor born on December 7, 1949, in Pomona, California. Emerging in the early 1970s Los Angeles club scene, he built a persona around a gravelly, whiskey-soaked voice and a lyrical world populated by drifters, barflies and late-night characters. His early albums leaned on jazz-inflected piano balladry and beat-poet storytelling, songs like «Ol’ 55» and «Martha» showing a romantic, melancholic side that also made him a favored songwriter for other artists.
In the early 1980s, partly under the influence of his wife and collaborator Kathleen Brennan, Waits radically reinvented his sound, moving toward clattering, junkyard percussion, dissonant horns and avant-garde arrangements that drew on Captain Beefheart, Kurt Weill and experimental theater. Albums built in this era redefined what a singer-songwriter record could sound like, trading conventional song structure for texture and atmosphere, as heard in pieces like «What’s He Building?» and «Chocolate Jesus».
Beyond music, Waits has had a substantial acting career in film, and his songs have been widely covered across rock, country and pop. He is a two-time Grammy Award winner and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, recognized as one of the most singular and influential voices in American songwriting, blending rock, blues, cabaret and experimental noise into a style entirely his own.
