About the artist
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers formed in Gainesville, Florida, in the mid-1970s and released their self-titled debut album in 1976, which included the enduring tracks «Breakdown» and «American Girl». Relocating to Los Angeles, the band emerged alongside the punk and new wave movements but stood apart with a sound rooted in classic American rock and roll, jangly guitars and Tom Petty’s distinctive vocal delivery.
Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, the band built a catalogue of enduring hits, including «Refugee», «The Waiting», «Don’t Do Me Like That» and «Learning to Fly», establishing themselves as a defining act of the heartland rock movement alongside contemporaries like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger. Their sound combined tight, economical arrangements with hook-driven songwriting and Mike Campbell’s distinctive lead guitar work.
The band continued recording and touring for decades, with the compilation-era hit «Mary Jane’s Last Dance» and albums like «Into the Great Wide Open» further cementing their legacy. Known for their reliability as a live act and Tom Petty’s consistent songwriting voice, the Heartbreakers remained one of American rock’s most respected and commercially successful bands until Petty’s death in 2017.
