About the artist
Three Dog Night were an American rock and pop group formed in Los Angeles in 1967 by vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. Built around three distinct lead voices, the band became one of the most commercially successful American acts of the late 1960s and early 1970s, built largely on a strategy of recording songs written by outside songwriters rather than the band members themselves — a then-unusual approach that let them draw from a wide pool of material, including early work by Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, and Hoyt Axton.
Their sound blended pop, soft rock, and blue-eyed soul, anchored by powerful, gospel-inflected lead vocals, especially from Negron, whose range defined hits like «One» and «Joy to the World». The group racked up a long run of Top 10 singles across just a few years, including «Mama Told Me (Not to Come)», «Eli's Coming», «Black & White», «Never Been to Spain», and «Shambala», mixing radio-friendly hooks with occasional socially conscious themes.
By the mid-1970s the band's commercial momentum faded, and internal struggles, including Negron's well-documented battle with addiction, contributed to lineup changes and an eventual hiatus. Three Dog Night nonetheless left a lasting mark as one of the defining hit-making machines of the era, and various lineups of the group have continued to tour under the name for decades.
