The Voidz

The Voidz is a genre-blurring band formed by Julian Casablancas, best known as the frontman of The Strokes, after the release of his solo album Phrazes for the Young. Casablancas pieced the group together from members of his touring band, including Jeramy Gritter, Amir Yaghmai, Jacob Bercovici, Alex Carapetis and Jeff Kite. The project was initially billed as Julian Casablancas+The Voidz before the band rebranded to simply The Voidz ahead of its second album, signaling a shift toward a more collective identity.

Musically, The Voidz deliberately reject a single genre, weaving together rock, psychedelia, electronic textures and lo-fi production choices into a deliberately unpolished, experimental sound that stands in sharp contrast to the polished garage-rock revival Casablancas helped define with The Strokes. Their debut album, Tyranny, and songs like «Human Sadness» and «Leave It in My Dreams» showcase this restless, boundary-pushing approach, mixing distorted guitars with warped synths and unconventional song structures. Casablancas has described the band as a separate creative tree from The Strokes rather than a side project, emphasizing its distinct identity. Tracks such as «Permanent High School», «Did My Best» and «Pyramid of Bones» further reflect the band's eclectic, genre-agnostic approach, making The Voidz a notable outlet for more experimental songwriting within Casablancas's career.
