The Verve

The Verve were an English rock band formed in Wigan in 1990 by Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones and Peter Salisbury, later joined by keyboardist Simon Tong. They emerged from the shoegaze and post-rock scenes of the early nineties, blending sprawling, effects-laden guitar textures with psychedelic atmosphere, before shifting toward a more song-focused, orchestral pop-rock sound that placed them at the heart of the Britpop era.

Their 1997 album Urban Hymns became one of the biggest-selling records in British chart history, driven by singles such as «Bitter Sweet Symphony», «The Drugs Don’t Work» and «Lucky Man». «Bitter Sweet Symphony» in particular became one of the defining anthems of the decade, its sweeping string arrangement and Ashcroft’s impassioned vocal turning it into an era-defining hit, though a sampling dispute over its Rolling Stones-derived orchestral loop led to a long-running credit controversy. Earlier releases, including A Northern Soul, had already shown the band’s ability to merge widescreen guitar rock with introspective songwriting.

Internal tensions, intensified by the sampling dispute, led to the band’s split in 1999. They reunited briefly in 2007 and released a fourth album, Forth, in 2008, before disbanding again. Since then, members—particularly Ashcroft—have pursued notable solo careers, while The Verve’s catalogue remains a touchstone of British nineties rock.
