The Tragically Hip

The Tragically Hip, often called simply «The Hip», were a five-piece rock band from Kingston, Ontario, formed by Gord Downie (lead vocals), Rob Baker (guitar), Gord Sinclair (bass), Johnny Fay (drums), and Paul Langlois (guitar). Over fourteen studio albums, they became one of the most beloved and influential bands in Canadian music history, celebrated for lyrics steeped in Canadian history, geography, and small-town storytelling.

Songs like «Bobcaygeon», «Ahead By a Century», «Wheat Kings», and «Grace, Too» became staples of Canadian radio and cultural identity, blending literate, image-rich songwriting with muscular, jam-inflected rock instrumentation. Their sound drew on classic rock and roots influences while carving out a distinctly Canadian voice that resonated far beyond typical mainstream rock audiences.

In 2016, Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, prompting the band's Man Machine Poem tour to become their farewell run. The final concert in Kingston on August 20, 2016, was broadcast nationally on the CBC and attended by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, an extraordinary moment that underscored the band's singular place in Canadian public life. Downie passed away on October 17, 2017, at age 53, closing the chapter on one of Canada's most iconic bands.
