The Stooges

The Stooges were an American rock band formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1967 by vocalist Iggy Pop (James Osterberg), guitarist Ron Asheton, drummer Scott Asheton, and bassist Dave Alexander, later joined by guitarist James Williamson. Widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of punk rock, the band channeled raw, primal energy into a sound that stripped rock down to its most confrontational essence.

Their self-titled 1969 debut and 1970’s Funhouse, produced with help from John Cale and the Velvet Underground orbit, delivered proto-punk landmarks like «I Wanna Be Your Dog», «No Fun», and «1969», built on relentless riffs, primitive rhythms, and Iggy Pop’s unhinged, confrontational stage presence. After lineup changes brought in Williamson, 1973’s Raw Power, mixed by David Bowie, added a sharper, more aggressive edge with tracks such as «Search and Destroy» and «Gimme Danger», cementing the record’s reputation as a foundational text for punk and hard rock alike.

Commercially unsuccessful in their time, The Stooges nonetheless proved hugely influential on punk, grunge, and alternative rock movements that followed. The band broke up in 1974, launching Iggy Pop into a celebrated solo career, before reforming in 2003. In 2010, The Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in recognition of their lasting impact.
