The Stone Roses

The Stone Roses were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1983, fronted by vocalist Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire, who first met and played together as teenagers before assembling the classic lineup with bassist Gary «Mani» Mounfield and drummer Alan «Reni» Wren. The band became one of the defining acts of the late-1980s Madchester scene, fusing jangly guitar pop with dance rhythms and psychedelic textures.

Their self-titled debut album is widely regarded as a landmark of British indie and alternative rock, featuring songs such as «I Wanna Be Adored», «She Bangs the Drums», «Sally Cinnamon», «Waterfall» and «I Am the Resurrection» that combined melodic songwriting with an expansive, almost hypnotic sense of groove. The single «Fools Gold» further cemented their reputation for bridging guitar-driven rock with dance and funk influences, a sound that proved deeply influential on the Britpop movement of the following decade.

Despite a relatively small catalogue and long gaps between releases, the Stone Roses left an outsized mark on British guitar music, inspiring countless bands with their combination of swagger, melody and rhythmic ambition. Squire’s guitar interplay and Brown’s laconic vocal delivery, anchored by Mani and Reni’s rhythm section, remain touchstones for the sound of Manchester’s alternative scene.
