The Smile

The Smile is a British rock supergroup formed by Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead alongside drummer Tom Skinner of the jazz group Sons of Kemet. The trio began collaborating during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns, working on unfinished material with long-time Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, before officially announcing the project in May 2021 ahead of a surprise debut performance streamed from Glastonbury's «Live at Worthy Farm».

Taking their name from a poem by Ted Hughes, The Smile released their debut single «You Will Never Work in Television Again» in January 2022, following further live debuts at the Royal Albert Hall and on Instagram Live. Their sound merges Radiohead's atmospheric, experimental tendencies with jazz-inflected rhythmic complexity courtesy of Skinner, resulting in music that is angular, tense, and texturally rich.

With Godrich again behind the desk, the band has built a catalog marked by intricate guitar interplay, shifting time signatures, and Yorke's instantly recognizable falsetto, drawing songs such as «Wall of Eyes», «Bending Hectic», and «Pana-vision» into a body of work that extends the sonic lineage of Radiohead while carving its own identity.
