The Presidents of the United States of America

The Presidents of the United States of America, often shortened to PUSA, were an alternative rock band from Seattle formed in the early 1990s by Chris Ballew, Dave Dederer, and drummer Jason Finn. Emerging just as grunge's darker, angst-driven sound dominated the city's scene, the trio went a deliberately different direction, embracing goofy humor, playful lyrics, and stripped-down instrumentation built around Ballew's custom two-string bass and Dederer's three-string guitar.

Their self-titled debut album became an unlikely commercial breakthrough, propelled by the singles «Lump» and «Peaches», both of which became MTV and radio staples and captured the band's irreverent, sing-along energy. The lo-fi, garage-pop sound and offbeat subject matter (an ode to peach trees, a stalker-ish riff on Lump the cat) set them apart from their more brooding Seattle peers and gave them a distinct novelty-rock identity within 1990s alternative music.

The band went through breakups and reunions over the following decades, with various lineup changes around the Ballew-Dederer-Finn core, continuing to release albums and tour intermittently. Their catalog remains a touchstone for a strain of gleefully weird, hook-driven alt-rock that stood in contrast to the more earnest grunge sound with which they shared a hometown and era.
