The Postal Service

The Postal Service were an American electronic pop duo consisting of producer Jimmy Tamborello (also known for his project Dntel) and singer-songwriter Ben Gibbard, best known as the frontman of Death Cab for Cutie. The pairing began when Tamborello's Dntel track «(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan» featured Gibbard on vocals in 2001, and the positive reception encouraged the pair to record a full album together, reportedly trading parts by mail — an origin story reflected in the group's name.

Their sole studio album, Give Up (2003), paired Tamborello's glitchy, melodic IDM-influenced production with Gibbard's plaintive, indie-pop songwriting, producing beloved tracks like «Such Great Heights», «Nothing Better» and «Sleeping In». Though its only charting single was «We Will Become Silhouettes», Give Up became one of the most influential and enduring indietronica records of the 2000s.

The duo went dormant for years before reuniting in 2013 for Coachella and an accompanying tour, alongside a deluxe reissue of Give Up featuring rarities and B-sides; they have not released new studio material since, though a live album, Everything Will Change, documented the reunion tour in 2020. Both members remained active elsewhere, with Tamborello continuing Dntel and Gibbard leading Death Cab for Cutie.
