The Pogues

The Pogues are an Anglo-Irish band formed in London in 1982, credited with popularizing Celtic punk by fusing traditional Irish folk instrumentation — tin whistle, banjo, accordion, mandolin — with the raw energy and attitude of punk rock. Fronted by the singular voice and songwriting of Shane McGowan, the band drew on Irish emigrant experience, drinking-song traditions, and literary influences to create a sound that felt both ancient and confrontational.

Their catalog includes staples like «Dirty Old Town», «A Pair of Brown Eyes», «Sally MacLennane» and «The Sickbed of Cúchulainn», but they are best known worldwide for «Fairytale of New York», a duet with Kirsty MacColl that has become one of the most enduring and frequently played Christmas songs in the UK and Ireland. Albums such as Rum Sodomy & the Lash and If I Should Fall from Grace with God are considered high points of their output, showcasing McGowan's songwriting alongside the band's tight, folk-rooted arrangements.
