The Mothers of Invention

The Mothers of Invention were an American rock band formed in 1964 in Los Angeles under the creative leadership of Frank Zappa, evolving from a bar band called the Soul Giants. Original members included vocalist Ray Collins, bassist Roy Estrada and drummer Jimmy Carl Black, with the lineup expanding over the years to include Bunk Gardner, Motorhead Sherwood, Don Preston, Ian Underwood and others. Signed to Verve Records, the label insisted on softening the band name to «The Mothers of Invention».

The group became one of the defining acts of the American underground, mixing satirical rock and doo-wop pastiche with avant-garde composition, free jazz and musique concrete. Their 1966 debut «Freak Out!» was among the earliest double-LP concept records in rock, and it was followed by «Absolutely Free», the Beatles-parodying «We're Only in It for the Money», «Cruising with Ruben & the Jets» and the sprawling «Uncle Meat». Later editions of the band, joined by violinists Don Sugarcane Harris and Jean-Luc Ponty and percussionist Ruth Underwood, pushed further into jazz-rock territory.

Zappa used the Mothers as a vehicle for biting social and musical satire, refusing to separate comedy from serious composition. The band's irreverence, technical virtuosity and genre-blurring approach influenced generations of progressive, art-rock and experimental musicians, cementing its reputation as one of the most inventive ensembles of the 1960s and early 1970s.
