The Monkees

The Monkees were an American pop-rock group formed in Los Angeles in 1965, assembled specifically for a television sitcom about a struggling rock band. Producer Bob Rafelson conceived the show, and after auditions Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith were cast as fictionalized versions of themselves. The series aired from 1966 to 1968 and turned the quartet into genuine pop stars almost overnight.

Although the band initially relied on outside songwriters and session musicians for their early recordings, they later fought for and won creative control, playing their own instruments and contributing original material. Their sound blended bright, hook-driven pop with elements of folk, country, and psychedelia, producing enduring hits such as «Last Train to Clarksville», «I’m a Believer», «Pleasant Valley Sunday», and «Daydream Believer».

The group's popularity waned after the experimental film Head and Peter Tork's departure, with Michael Nesmith leaving soon after. Reruns of the television show kept introducing new generations to the band, fueling reunion tours in later decades, notably a resurgence in the 1980s driven by MTV airing the original episodes.
