The Microphones

The Microphones is the recording project of American musician Phil Elverum, revered within the underground and freak-folk scenes for its intimate, deliberately lo-fi aesthetic and hushed, close-mic'd vocals. Operating primarily out of Anacortes, Washington, and associated with the K Records label, Elverum built a body of work that felt handmade and personal even as it stretched into ambitious, layered sound collage.

His breakthrough came with «The Glow Pt. 2», an album that became one of the most acclaimed indie releases of 2001 and remains the project's defining statement, praised for its raw production and emotionally direct songwriting. He followed it with the more expansive and conceptual «Mount Eerie», a record that pushed the project's sound into cinematic, exploratory territory.

Elverum released four studio albums as The Microphones before retiring the name and continuing his work under the name Mount Eerie. Songs such as «the Moon», «Headless Horseman», and «I Felt Your Shape» remain touchstones of the project's catalog, and its influence continues to resonate through the lo-fi and folk-adjacent corners of independent music.
