The Mars Volta

The Mars Volta formed in 2001 in El Paso, Texas, after the breakup of the influential post-hardcore band At the Drive-In, led by vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López. The band became one of the defining acts of 2000s progressive rock, fusing punk energy with Latin rhythms, free jazz, and psychedelic experimentation into sprawling, densely layered compositions.

Their debut album De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003), a concept record inspired by the life and death of their late friend Julio Venegas, established the band's dense, suite-like songwriting, heard in tracks like «Inertiatic ESP» and «Cicatriz ESP». Subsequent albums such as Frances the Mute, the aggressively heavy Bedlam in Goliath, and the more electronic-leaning Noctourniquet showed the band constantly reshaping its sound, while songs like «Cassandra Gemini», «L'Via L'Viaquez», and «Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)» became staples of their live shows.

The lineup went through many changes over the years, with Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala remaining the creative core throughout. The band broke up in 2013, but reunited later in the decade, releasing new music and confirming their lasting influence on progressive and experimental rock.
