The Magnetic Fields

The Magnetic Fields is an American indie pop project centered around songwriter, producer and vocalist Stephin Merritt, formed in Boston in the late 1980s. Though a rotating group of collaborators has contributed over the years — most notably vocalist and instrumentalist Claudia Gonson, who has also served as the band's manager — Merritt remains the primary creative force behind nearly all the songwriting.

The group is best known for its ambitious 1999 triple album 69 Love Songs, a sprawling, genre-hopping collection that cemented Merritt's reputation as one of indie pop's sharpest and wittiest lyricists. His baritone voice, deadpan delivery and love of vintage synthesizers and ukulele alongside orchestral arrangements gave the band a distinctive, theatrical sound that draws on Tin Pan Alley songcraft, synthpop and chamber pop in equal measure.

Merritt's lyrics often explore love with irony, melancholy and dark humor, frequently subverting conventional gender roles in his narratives. Beyond The Magnetic Fields, he has led related side projects including The 6ths, Future Bible Heroes and The Gothic Archies, and has composed music for theater and film, cementing his place as one of the more idiosyncratic songwriters in American indie music.
