The Jesus and Mary Chain

The Jesus and Mary Chain are a Scottish alternative rock band formed in 1983 by brothers Jim and William Reid, with various other members joining over the years. Emerging from the post-punk landscape, they became one of the most influential acts of the 1980s underground, pairing sweet, melodic songwriting reminiscent of 1960s pop with abrasive walls of guitar feedback and distortion — a combination that shocked and captivated audiences at the time and helped seed the shoegaze and noise-pop movements that followed.

Their debut album, «Psychocandy», received widespread critical acclaim and is now regarded as a landmark record, admired for the way it fused the noise aesthetics of The Stooges with the songcraft sensibility of Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground. The follow-up albums «Darklands», «Automatic», and «Honey's Dead» continued to earn strong reviews, refining the band's sound while retaining its core tension between beauty and abrasion. Songs like «Just Like Honey» and «April Skies» remain among their most celebrated work.

Internal tensions between the Reid brothers eventually led to the band's split in 1999, following their sixth and least commercially successful album, «Munki». They reformed in 2007, touring and releasing compilations before recording a new studio album, «Damage and Joy», in 2017 — a return that reaffirmed their enduring influence on generations of guitar-based rock and alternative acts.
