The HU

The HU is a Mongolian rock band formed in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, blending heavy metal instrumentation with traditional Mongolian throat singing and folk instruments such as the morin khuur (horsehead fiddle), tovshuur (Mongolian lute) and tumur khuur (jaw harp). The band calls its style «Hunnu Rock», a nod to the ancient Hunnu (Hun) empire, and often incorporates historical war cries and poetry into its lyrics, sung largely in Mongolian.

The group's early music videos, «Yuve Yuve Yu» and «Wolf Totem», went viral internationally and brought The HU rapid global recognition, drawing coverage from major international media outlets. Their sound merges the raw power of rock and metal with the deep, resonant textures of Mongolian throat singing, creating a distinctive fusion rarely heard in Western rock. Notable tracks include «The Great Chinggis Khaan», «Sugaan Essena» and «The Legend of Mother Swan», alongside collaborations such as a version of «Wolf Totem» featuring Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach and «Black Thunder» with Serj Tankian and members of Bad Wolves.

All members of The HU have formal music education, and the band has toured extensively, positioning traditional Mongolian musical heritage within a contemporary global rock context and introducing international audiences to Mongolian folk instrumentation and throat-singing traditions.
