The Hold Steady

The Hold Steady are an American rock band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2004 by vocalist and guitarist Craig Finn and guitarist Tad Kubler, both formerly of the Minneapolis band Lifter Puller. Rounded out by bassist Galen Polivka and drummer Bobby Drake, the group built its reputation on Finn's dense, novelistic lyrics — sprawling narratives populated by recurring characters, often set against a backdrop of drug addiction, Catholic guilt, and searching for redemption on the margins of the Twin Cities.

Musically the band draws on classic bar-band rock, drawing comparisons to Bruce Springsteen and The Replacements, favoring big guitar riffs, pub-piano flourishes, and Finn's half-sung, half-spoken delivery over polished radio hooks. Keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Franz Nicolay joined in 2005, adding accordion and harmonica textures before departing in 2010 and later returning in 2016; guitarist Steve Selvidge has also been a longtime member.

The band's debut, Almost Killed Me, arrived in 2004, but it was their third album, Boys and Girls in America (2006), that brought wider critical acclaim and cemented their status as one of the defining rock bands of the mid-2000s indie scene. Songs like «Stuck Between Stations» and «Your Little Hoodrat Friend» remain touchstones of their catalog, and the band has continued releasing albums and touring in the years since.
