About the artist
The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the early 1960s. Though they built an early following in Canada, the group broke internationally in the late 1960s and became one of the first Canadian rock acts to achieve major success in the United States, laying groundwork for the country's rock scene that later acts would build on.
The band's classic lineup was driven by the songwriting partnership of Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman, who would later found Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Their sound blended blues-rock grit with pop hooks and occasional psychedelic and progressive flourishes, delivered through Cummings' powerful, soulful vocals and Bachman's guitar work. Hits like «American Woman», «These Eyes», «No Time», «Laughing» and «Undun» showcased that range, moving between hard-driving rock riffs and softer, melodic ballads.
«American Woman» in particular became a landmark single, reaching number one in the US and standing as one of the defining Canadian rock songs of its era. Even after lineup changes through the 1970s, The Guess Who's catalog remained a staple of classic rock radio, and the band is remembered as a foundational act in Canadian rock history.
