The Garden

The Garden is a duo of twin brothers, Wyatt and Fletcher Shears, from Orange County, California, who emerged from the region's punk and hardcore scene while still in high school. Rather than following the conventional punk-band lineup, they stripped their sound down to just bass and drums, using that limitation to build a raw, propulsive, and deliberately strange approach to punk that draws on post-punk and no-wave influences.

Their music is marked by an anti-genre, self-branded concept they call «vada vada», resisting easy categorization and embracing abstraction, invented words, and songs about ordinary or inanimate subjects delivered with theatrical, confrontational energy. This restless, shape-shifting approach has let them move between punk, dance-punk, and more melodic or pop-leaning territory across their catalog, always retaining a distinctly anti-self-serious spirit and a strong visual and performative identity on stage.

Albums like The Life and Times of a Paperclip helped define their early sound, and songs such as «Egg», «Call the Dogs Out», and «Do the Bruise» became cult favorites within DIY and alternative scenes. Beyond music, the Shears twins have also pursued fashion and visual art projects, extending The Garden's aesthetic beyond records into a broader creative persona that blurs the line between music, performance, and image.
