The Fall

The Fall are an English post-punk band formed in Manchester in 1976 by Mark E. Smith, who remained the group’s sole constant member until his death in 2018. Emerging from the same scene that produced Joy Division and the Buzzcocks, the band quickly distinguished itself through Smith’s sardonic, stream-of-consciousness lyrics, drawing on writers like Philip K. Dick and Thomas Hardy alongside a corrosive wit aimed at British culture and politics.

Musically, the Fall built a sound around repetitive, motorik rhythms indebted to Can, jagged guitars, and a deliberately rough production aesthetic that made them a defining act of the post-punk underground. Smith’s notoriously high band turnover, with dozens of musicians passing through over four decades, gave the group a constantly shifting instrumental character while his voice and worldview held it together.

Extraordinarily prolific, the Fall released roughly one album a year for much of their existence, including well-regarded records such as «Hex Enduction Hour» and «This Nation’s Saving Grace». They were championed by BBC DJ John Peel, who called them a lasting influence, and their impact can be heard in bands from Pavement to Sonic Youth. The group dissolved with Smith’s death in January 2018.
