The Dresden Dolls

The Dresden Dolls are an American duo from Boston, Massachusetts, formed in 2000 by Amanda Palmer (vocals, piano) and Brian Viglione (drums, percussion). They coined the term «Brechtian punk cabaret» to describe their sound, blending theatrical, confessional songwriting with the raw energy of punk and the dramatic flourishes of cabaret and vaudeville.

The duo became a central act in the underground dark cabaret scene that took shape in the early 2000s, drawing on Weimar-era theater, glam rock, and DIY punk aesthetics. Palmer's piano-driven melodrama and biting lyricism paired with Viglione's dynamic drumming gave the band a stripped-down but visually and emotionally intense stage presence, often performed in stark makeup reminiscent of silent-film or circus performers.

Songs like «Girl Anachronism» and «Coin-Operated Boy» became underground anthems, showcasing the band's blend of vulnerability, dark humor, and theatricality. Palmer later became known for her prolific solo career and her ties to the Boston art-punk community, while The Dresden Dolls remain a touchstone for the modern cabaret-punk revival.
