About the artist
The Cramps were an American band formed in Sacramento, California in 1976, later closely tied to New York’s downtown punk scene around CBGB. Fronted by vocalist Lux Interior and guitarist Poison Ivy, the band fused raw punk energy with vintage rockabilly, surf, and 1950s B-movie horror aesthetics, creating a sound and image widely credited with founding the psychobilly subgenre.
Their music leaned on primal, reverb-drenched guitar, minimal drumming, and Lux Interior’s theatrical, unhinged stage presence, drawing as much from garage rock obscurities and horror films as from punk itself. Songs like «Human Fly», «Garbageman» and «Goo Goo Muck» (a cover that became closely identified with the band) exemplify their blend of camp, menace and greasy rock and roll swagger, while tracks such as «Bikini Girls with Machine Guns» and «What’s Inside a Girl?» reflect their pulpy, exploitation-film sensibility.
The Cramps built a cult following through relentless touring and a wildly theatrical live show rather than mainstream chart success, and their influence extended well beyond punk into garage rock revival, goth, and psychobilly scenes that followed in their wake. Decades after their formation, they remain a touchstone for bands mixing rock and roll roots with subversive, horror-tinged theatrics.
