The Contortionist

The Contortionist is an American progressive metal band from Indianapolis, Indiana, formed in 2007. Emerging from the djent-adjacent wave of technical, downtuned metal in the late 2000s, the band built its reputation on intricate, polyrhythmic guitar interplay layered with atmospheric keyboards, giving their early work a dense, technical intensity within the progressive metal and metalcore scenes.

Over the course of four studio albums — «Exoplanet» (2010), «Intrinsic» (2012), «Language» (2014), and «Clairvoyant» (2017) — the band steadily moved away from harsher, more aggressive vocals toward cleaner, melodic singing and increasingly spacious, ambient arrangements, a trajectory that set them apart from many of their tech-metal peers and drew comparisons to progressive rock as much as metal. This evolution was accompanied by a shifting lineup, with vocalist Michael Lessard's arrival marking a turning point toward the band's more melodic, atmospheric identity.

Alongside their full-length albums, The Contortionist have released a string of EPs, including «Sporadic Movements», «Shapeshifter», «Apparition», «Language: Rediscovered», and «Our Bones», the latter pair revisiting earlier material in reimagined, more melodic forms. The band's sound is often cited as a touchstone for the more introspective, texture-driven side of modern progressive metal.
