The Connells

The Connells are an American jangle-pop and college-rock band formed in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1984 by brothers Mike and David Connell. Emerging from the same fertile North Carolina scene that produced R.E.M., they built their sound on chiming guitars, melodic bass lines, and the alternating lead vocals of Doug MacMillan, mixing power-pop hooks with a wistful, autumnal mood distinct from flashier contemporaries.

The band found its widest audience with «’74-’75», a gently melancholic single from the 1993 album Ring that unexpectedly topped charts across several European countries, even as it stayed a modest success at home. Earlier tracks like «Fun & Games», «Stone Cold Yesterday», and «Doin’ You» built a devoted college-radio following through the late 1980s, establishing the group within the American jangle-pop movement.

Across a career spanning multiple albums on independent and major labels, The Connells kept a stable lineup and consistent sound, favoring craftsmanship over trend-chasing. Songs such as «Inside My Head», «New Boy», «Over There», and «I Suppose» highlight the band’s bittersweet, hook-laden guitar pop, and their catalog remains a touchstone for fans of 1980s–90s American alternative rock.
