The Church

The Church are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1980, celebrated for their psychedelic, atmospheric take on guitar-driven rock. Built around intertwining guitar lines and dreamy, layered soundscapes, the band quickly distinguished itself from the post-punk and new wave acts of the era with a more introspective, textured approach.

Their debut album Of Skins and Heart (1980) achieved gold certification and produced the single «The Unguarded Moment», which reached the Australian charts and established the band's sound. Follow-up The Blurred Crusade (1982) built on this momentum, charting higher and yielding the hit «Almost With You», while later albums such as Seance (1983) continued to explore denser, more atmospheric production.

The Church's biggest international breakthrough came with «Under the Milky Way», a song that became a defining alternative rock anthem and remains their best-known work worldwide. Over a career spanning decades, the band has maintained a devoted following for its consistent commitment to melodic, textured psychedelic rock, and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010 in recognition of their lasting influence on Australian music.
