The Cardigans

The Cardigans are a Swedish rock band formed in Jönköping in 1992. The classic lineup features vocalist Nina Persson, guitarist Peter Svensson, bassist Magnus Sveningsson, drummer Bengt Lagerberg and keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson; guitarist Oskar Humlebo joined later. The band emerged from the Swedish indie scene of the early 1990s, blending jangly guitar pop with lounge and easy-listening influences, a mix that made them distinctive even before they became internationally famous.

Their debut album «Emmerdale» (1994) built a strong following in Sweden, and the follow-up «Life» (1995) expanded their reach abroad with songs like «Carnival». International stardom arrived with «First Band on the Moon» (1996), whose single «Lovefool» became a global hit thanks in part to its placement in the film «Romeo + Juliet». The record showed the band shifting toward moodier, more guitar-driven pop without losing its melodic core.

Later albums such as «Gran Turismo» (1998) and «Long Gone Before Daylight» (2003) pushed the group toward darker, more introspective territory, revealing a songwriting depth beyond their early cheerful image. After a hiatus, band members pursued side projects — Persson with A Camp, Svensson with Paus — before The Cardigans reunited for live performances. Their catalog remains a touchstone of 1990s Swedish pop-rock, admired for pairing bittersweet lyrics with instantly memorable melodies.
