About the artist
The Allman Brothers Band, formed in 1969 in Jacksonville, Florida, is widely regarded as the founding act of Southern rock, fusing blues, jazz improvisation, country and hard rock into a distinctive twin-guitar, twin-drummer sound. The original lineup centered on brothers Duane Allman (lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (keyboards, vocals), alongside guitarist Dickey Betts, bassist Berry Oakley, and drummers Jai Johanny «Jaimoe» Johanson and Butch Trucks. Their self-titled debut and «Idlewild South» established the band, but it was the sprawling, improvisation-heavy live album «At Fillmore East» that cemented their reputation as one of rock's great performing acts.
The band's catalogue produced enduring staples such as «Ramblin' Man», «Midnight Rider», «Melissa» and the instrumental «Jessica», tracks that showcase Betts's melodic songwriting alongside the group's extended jam-based arrangements. Tragedy struck early and repeatedly: both Duane Allman and Berry Oakley died in separate motorcycle accidents at age 24, within roughly a year of each other, forcing the band to rebuild around Gregg Allman, Betts, Jaimoe and Trucks.
Despite these losses, the band continued through multiple breakups and reformations over the following decades, with later lineups incorporating musicians including Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and are credited as a foundational influence on Southern rock, jam bands and blues-rock guitar playing more broadly. The group played its final show and disbanded for good in 2014.
