About the artist
The Academy Is… was an American pop-punk/emo band from Chicago, Illinois, active from the early to late 2000s. Fronted by William Beckett, with Mike Carden on lead guitar and Adam Siska on bass, the band emerged from the same Chicago scene that produced Fall Out Boy, whose bassist Pete Wentz signed them to Fueled by Ramen and later to his own Decaydance imprint.
The band’s sound combined driving pop-punk energy with theatrical, emotionally charged lyrics and Beckett’s distinctive vocal delivery. Their 2005 debut «Almost Here» and its singles «Slow Down» and «The Phrase That Pays» helped define the mid-2000s emo-pop-punk wave alongside labelmates like Panic! at the Disco, whom they famously toured with on the Truckstops and Statelines tour. Subsequent albums «Santi» (2007) and «Fast Times at Barrington High» (2008) pushed their sound in more polished, arena-ready directions.
The band went on hiatus and eventually disbanded around 2011, with Beckett pursuing a solo career afterward. Despite a relatively brief run, The Academy Is… remain a notable act from the Fueled by Ramen/Decaydance roster that shaped the sound of 2000s American pop-punk and emo.
