Tegan and Sara

Tegan and Sara are a Canadian musical duo formed by identical twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin in Calgary, Alberta. They began writing and performing together as teenagers in the late 1990s, initially under the name Plunk, before independently releasing their debut album and eventually signing to Neil Young's Vapor Records, which helped launch their career beyond the Canadian indie scene.

Across their discography, the duo has moved fluidly from folk-tinged indie rock in their earliest records toward the polished, hook-driven synth-pop that came to define albums like The Con and Heartthrob. Notably, the sisters wrote their songs separately for most of their career, only beginning to co-write together starting with their 2009 album Sainthood, a shift that reflects the duo's ongoing evolution as songwriters while retaining the intimate, emotionally direct lyricism that has anchored their work from the start.

Beyond music, Tegan and Sara are prominent LGBTQ+ advocates; both are openly gay, and in 2016 they founded the Tegan and Sara Foundation to support economic justice, health, and representation for LGBTQ girls and women. In 2019 they published the memoir High School, chronicling their teenage years, which was later adapted for television. Their work has also reached mainstream audiences through collaborations, including their contribution to the soundtrack of The Lego Movie.
