Sun Kil Moon

Sun Kil Moon is a folk rock project founded in San Francisco in 2002, serving as the primary vehicle for singer-songwriter and guitarist Mark Kozelek following the winding down of his earlier band Red House Painters. Taking its name from Korean lightweight boxer Sung-Kil Moon, the project debuted with Ghosts of the Great Highway in 2003, an album that drew widespread critical acclaim for its blend of slow-burning folk rock and expansive, guitar-driven arrangements.

While early releases featured contributions from former Red House Painters members, Sun Kil Moon increasingly became a solo outlet for Kozelek, particularly from Admiral Fell Promises onward, where his intricate acoustic guitar work took center stage. His songwriting is marked by long, prose-like verses, deeply personal and often autobiographical narratives, and recurring references to mortality, memory, and boxing, a sport he has referenced repeatedly throughout the catalog.

Over the years, Sun Kil Moon's sound has shifted from melodic, reverb-laden folk rock toward a more spoken-word, stream-of-consciousness style on later records, reflecting Kozelek's evolving approach to songwriting. Songs such as «Carissa» and «Carry Me Ohio» stand among the project's best-known work, illustrating its emotionally raw, narrative-driven core that has made it a distinctive presence within American indie folk and rock.
