Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots are an American rock band formed in San Diego, California, in 1989 by vocalist Scott Weiland, bassist Robert DeLeo, guitarist Dean DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz. Emerging alongside the grunge explosion of the early 1990s, the band carved out a distinct post-grunge identity that drew as much from classic rock as from the Seattle sound of the era.

Their 1992 debut Core, powered by singles «Plush» and «Creep», turned them into a commercial powerhouse almost overnight, while follow-ups like Purple and Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop showcased a growing willingness to experiment with psychedelia, funk, and glam-tinged pop. Songs such as «Interstate Love Song» and «Big Empty» became defining rock radio staples of the decade. Weiland’s smoky, theatrical vocals and the DeLeo brothers’ intricate, riff-driven arrangements gave STP a sound often compared to Led Zeppelin and The Doors, even as critics debated their originality against grunge contemporaries.

Despite lineup changes and Weiland’s death in 2015, which led to Jeff Gutt joining as vocalist, Stone Temple Pilots have remained active, and their catalogue continues to be seen as one of the most consistently melodic and musically ambitious bodies of work to emerge from the post-grunge era.
