Steely Dan

Steely Dan is an American rock band centered on the songwriting partnership of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who met as students at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and went on to define one of the most distinctive sounds in 1970s popular music. Named after a device referenced in William S. Burroughs’ novel Naked Lunch, the band fused rock with jazz harmony, meticulous studio craft, and lyrics laced with irony and literary allusion.

After early live-band years that included guitarist Jeff «Skunk» Baxter and drummer Jim Hodder, Becker and Fagen retreated increasingly into the studio, favoring elite session musicians such as Larry Carlton and Michael McDonald over a fixed touring lineup. This approach produced landmark albums including Aja and Gaucho, with songs like «Do It Again», «Peg», «Deacon Blues», «Hey Nineteen», «Kid Charlemagne», and «Reelin’ In the Years» prized for their harmonic sophistication and immaculate production.

Steely Dan disbanded in 1981 before reuniting in the mid-1990s and eventually releasing new studio material, including the Grammy-winning Two Against Nature. The duo continued performing until Becker’s death in 2017; their catalog remains a touchstone for the blend of rock songwriting and jazz sophistication, influencing generations of musicians and producers.
