Smash Mouth

Smash Mouth is an American rock band formed in San Jose, California, in 1994, originally featuring Steve Harwell on vocals, Kevin Coleman on drums, Greg Camp on guitar, and Paul De Lisle on bass. Emerging during the late-1990s alternative rock and ska-revival wave, the band quickly stood out for its retro-inflected, hook-driven sound that borrowed freely from decades of pop and rock history.

The band broke through with «Walkin' on the Sun» in 1997, but achieved lasting cultural ubiquity with «All Star» in 1999, a song that became inescapable through film soundtracks, most notably Shrek. Their catalog also features numerous playful covers, including The Monkees' «I'm a Believer», War's «Why Can't We Be Friends?», and ? & the Mysterians' «Can't Get Enough of You Baby», reflecting the band's fondness for reviving and reinterpreting older material.

With their blend of surf-rock guitar tones, ska-tinged rhythms, and irreverent humor, Smash Mouth carved out a distinctive niche in late-90s pop-rock. Decades after their breakthrough, «All Star» in particular has endured as an internet-era touchstone, keeping the band culturally relevant well beyond its original chart run.
