Shahin Najafi

Shahin Najafi is an Iranian musician, poet and social activist, born in 1980 in Bandar-e Anzali, Iran. He began writing poetry and playing classical and flamenco guitar as a teenager before turning to underground rock, developing a style that fuses rock, jazz and blues with sharply political lyrics addressing Iranian society.

His outspoken songs about poverty, censorship, women's rights and political repression drew the attention of Iranian authorities, forcing him into exile in 2004; he settled in Germany in 2005. Known as the «angry bard», he became a prominent voice of dissent, and for a period his work moved into rap and hip hop, earning him a devoted following among young Iranians despite being banned domestically.

His most controversial release came in 2012 with «Naghi», a song addressed to a Shiite Imam that provoked outrage among religious hardliners and led to death threats against him. Across tracks like «Zahraab», «Aram», «Ay Leili» and «Shah», Najafi's music remains defined by its confrontational political stance and genre-crossing sound, making him one of the most prominent dissident musicians of the Iranian diaspora.
