Сектор Газа (Sektor Gaza)

Сектор Газа (Sektor Gaza) was a Russian punk rock band from Voronezh, fronted by singer, guitarist and songwriter Yuri Klinskikh, known by his stage name Yura Khoy. Active mainly through the late 1980s and 1990s, the band became one of the most widely known and most quoted acts of Russian rock, with cassette-tape distribution making their songs part of the collective memory of a generation growing up in post-Soviet Russia.

Their sound combined raw, garage-style punk rock instrumentation with blunt, often deliberately vulgar and provocative lyrics, mixing dark humor, social satire and folk-tale absurdity with genuinely tragic, introspective material. Songs like «Колхозный панк (Collective-farm punk)» and «Частушки (Ditties)» showcase the comic, folkloric side of the band, drawing on the Russian chastushka tradition, while tracks such as «Туман (Mist)» and «Демобилизация (Demobilization)» reveal a bleaker, more serious register addressing poverty, war and death.

The band released a steady stream of albums through the 1990s, including Колхозный панк, Нажми на газ, Газовая атака and Восставший из ада, cementing a cult following that persisted well beyond their active years. Yuri Klinskikh's death in 2000 effectively ended the group, but Сектор Газа remains a foundational reference point in Russian rock and punk culture, still widely covered and quoted decades later.
