Sabaton

Sabaton is a Swedish power metal band formed in Falun in 1999, initially performing under the name Aeon before adopting the name of a medieval foot armor piece. The band built its identity around a singular lyrical focus: war, historical battles, and the soldiers who fought them, drawing heavily on World War I and World War II but also reaching into other conflicts and figures across history. Frontman Joakim Broden and bassist Par Sundstrom have anchored the lineup since its inception, with the guitar and drum positions seeing several changes over the years.

Musically, Sabaton is known for anthemic, hook-driven power metal built on driving double-bass drumming, keyboard-laced melodies, and gang-vocal choruses designed for arena singalongs. Songs like «Primo Victoria», «The Red Baron», «Panzerkampf», and «The Attack of the Dead Men» exemplify this approach, pairing bombastic instrumentation with narrative lyrics that often function as musical history lessons. The band has cultivated an educational side project, the Sabaton History YouTube channel, which explores the real events behind their songs.

Over two decades, Sabaton has released a string of albums that broadened its audience well beyond the traditional power metal scene, including the platinum-certified Carolus Rex, and has become known for elaborate, tank-and-artillery-themed stage productions. Tracks such as «To Hell and Back» and «The Last Stand» remain among their most recognized, cementing the band as one of the most commercially successful acts in modern power metal.
