Rush

Rush was a Canadian progressive rock band formed in Toronto in 1968, active for nearly five decades until their retirement in 2016. For over forty years the lineup was fixed as bassist, keyboardist and lead vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer and primary lyricist Neil Peart, who joined in 1974. The trio became one of the most technically accomplished acts in rock, known for complex time signatures, extended instrumental passages and Lee's distinctive high-register voice.

Across their catalog Rush moved through blues-rock and hard-rock beginnings toward the sprawling conceptual pieces of the mid-1970s, epitomized by «2112», then into a synthesizer-driven new-wave-inflected sound on albums like Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, home to «Tom Sawyer», «Limelight», «Freewill» and «The Spirit of Radio». Later records such as Signals brought «Subdivisions», continuing their evolution while retaining Peart's literate, philosophical lyrics on subjects ranging from science fiction and libertarian individualism to history and literature — the band notably steered away from conventional love songs.

Rush's musicianship and Peart's lyrical ambition made them a touchstone for progressive and hard rock alike, influencing generations of musicians. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, closing out their run as one of the best-selling and most respected rock trios in history.
