Rodriguez

Sixto Rodriguez, performing simply as Rodriguez, was an American singer-songwriter from Detroit whose story became one of the most remarkable in modern music. In the early 1970s he released two albums, «Cold Fact» and «Coming from Reality», blending folk songwriting with psychedelic and soul-inflected production, marked by literate, socially conscious lyrics often compared to Bob Dylan. In the United States the records sold poorly and Rodriguez faded into obscurity, working manual labor jobs in Detroit for decades.

Unbeknownst to him, «Cold Fact» became a cult phenomenon in South Africa, where bootlegged copies circulated widely and songs like «Sugar Man» and «Crucify Your Mind» soundtracked a generation, particularly among anti-apartheid youth. Rodriguez remained unaware of this fame for years, and rumors even circulated that he had died. The 2012 Oscar-winning documentary «Searching for Sugar Man» told the story of his rediscovery, bringing him renewed international attention and leading to sold-out concerts abroad in his later years.

Musically, Rodriguez’s work stands out for its combination of intimate, Dylan-esque songwriting with lush, orchestrated folk-rock arrangements, and lyrics that address poverty, urban alienation and social injustice with plainspoken poetic force. Though his recorded output was small, his belated recognition made him one of the most compelling rediscovery stories in popular music history.
