Primus

Primus is an American rock band formed in El Sobrante, California, led by bassist and vocalist Les Claypool, whose percussive slap-bass technique and idiosyncratic songwriting define the group’s sound. Since forming in the mid-1980s, the band has built a reputation on a genre-defying mix that Claypool himself has described as «psychedelic polka», blending funk, metal, prog rock, and absurdist storytelling into a style that resists easy categorization.

Musically, Primus stands apart for putting the bass guitar front and center rather than treating it as a rhythm-section afterthought, paired with unusual time signatures, cartoonish vocal delivery, and lyrics that veer into surreal, satirical, and darkly comic territory. Songs like «Jerry Was a Race Car Driver», «Tommy the Cat», and «My Name Is Mud» showcase this combination of technical musicianship and wry humor that made the band a fixture of alternative and underground rock culture in the 1990s.

Beyond their studio output, Primus reached a much wider audience through «South Park Theme», the instantly recognizable opening theme for the animated series South Park, which introduced the band’s sound to millions of viewers who might never have encountered their albums. The band’s self-deprecating slogan, «Primus Sucks», reflects their long-standing irreverence toward industry conventions even as they built a devoted cult following and influenced generations of bassists and experimental rock acts.
