Pixies

Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1986, consisting of Black Francis (Charles Thompson, vocals and guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), David Lovering (drums), and, for most of their history, Kim Deal on bass, later succeeded by Paz Lenchantin. Their sound fused punk aggression with surf-rock melody and pop hooks, built around dramatic loud-quiet-loud dynamics that became one of the most influential templates in alternative rock.

The band's catalog, including landmark albums like «Surfer Rosa» and «Doolittle», produced enduring songs such as «Where Is My Mind?», «Debaser», «Gigantic», and «Monkey Gone to Heaven». Black Francis's cryptic, surreal lyrics touching on themes like violence, religion, and the uncanny, paired with his intense vocal delivery alongside Deal's melodic counterpoints, gave the band a distinctive identity that diverged sharply from mainstream rock of the era. Their influence on the sound of 1990s alternative rock, most famously acknowledged by Kurt Cobain, was profound despite the band's own modest commercial success at the time.

Pixies split in 1993 and reunited in 2004 for touring, eventually returning to recording new material. Kim Deal departed in 2013, with Paz Lenchantin later joining on bass. Their reunion and legacy cemented Pixies as one of the most important and enduringly influential bands to emerge from the American alternative rock underground.
