Pinegrove

Pinegrove is an American alt-country and indie rock band from Montclair, New Jersey, formed around 2010 by childhood friends Evan Stephens Hall, who serves as lead vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter, and drummer Zack Levine. Over the years the lineup has shifted and included musicians such as Nandi Rose Plunkett, known for her own project Half Waif, alongside other collaborators who have rotated through the group. The band takes its name from a stand of pine trees near Kenyon College in Ohio, where Hall studied, and it has become known for recurring visual motifs like squares and ampersands tied to its releases.

Musically, Pinegrove blends the twang and storytelling of country music with the emotional intensity and loud-quiet dynamics of indie and emo-adjacent rock, anchored by Hall's conversational, confessional lyrics about friendship, self-doubt and small-town life. After a run of self-released tapes and EPs, the band's early work was compiled into «Everything So Far» before they signed to Run for Cover Records. Their breakthrough came with the 2016 album «Cardinal», which drew widespread critical praise and built a devoted following within the American indie rock scene.

Songs such as «Old Friends», «New Friends» and «Size of the Moon» remain among the band's most recognized tracks, showcasing the interplay between Hall's introspective songwriting and the group's warm, guitar-driven arrangements. Pinegrove has continued to release music and tour in the years since, remaining a notable name within the modern American indie and alt-country landscape.
