Periphery

Periphery are an American progressive metal band formed in 2005 around Washington, D.C., widely regarded as one of the founding acts of the djent movement. The group grew out of guitarist and producer Misha Mansoor's home-recorded demos and eventually settled into a lineup featuring vocalist Spencer Sotelo, guitarists Mark Holcomb and Jake Bowen, drummer Matt Halpern, and bassist Adam «Nolly» Getgood.

Musically the band is known for intricate polyrhythms, palm-muted low-string riffing, and sudden tempo shifts, wrapped around soaring, melodic vocal lines that set them apart from purely instrumental djent acts. Their self-titled 2010 debut established this blend of technical aggression and pop-inflected hooks, deepened further on Periphery II: This Time It's Personal and the two-part concept records Juggernaut: Alpha and Juggernaut: Omega.

The band has received a Grammy nomination and is known for self-producing and self-mixing its own material, giving it tight control over its dense, layered sound. Tracks like «Reptile» and «Scarlet» balance crushing heaviness with anthemic choruses, and Periphery remains one of the most influential names in modern progressive metal.
